What Is a Bevel Protractor? Parts, Least Count and How to Read It

Angles matter as much as lengths in machined parts, fixtures and fabricated assemblies. The bevel protractor is the workshop standard for measuring them. This guide explains its parts, least count, reading method and uses.

What is a bevel protractor?

A bevel protractor is a precision angle measuring instrument with a fixed stock and an adjustable blade. The angle between stock and blade is read from a circular degree scale and a vernier scale. A universal bevel protractor reads angles to 5 minutes of arc across the full 360 degrees.

A simple protractor reads only whole degrees. The vernier on a universal bevel protractor divides each degree into twelve parts. That resolution makes it suitable for inspection of chamfers, tapers, dovetails and machined angles.

What are the parts of a universal bevel protractor?

PartFunction
Stock (base)Fixed reference face placed against the workpiece
BodyCarries the main degree scale
Turret (dial)Rotating disc that carries the vernier scale and holds the blade
BladeAdjustable straight edge that slides and rotates to meet the second face
Main scaleGraduated in degrees, in four quadrants of 0 to 90 degrees
Vernier scaleTwelve divisions on each side of zero for reading minutes
Blade clampLocks the blade at the required length
Locking nutLocks the turret so the reading cannot shift
Fine adjustmentMoves the turret in small steps for precise setting
Acute angle attachmentExtra arm for measuring angles below 90 degrees

What is the least count of a bevel protractor?

The least count of a universal bevel protractor is 5 minutes of arc. Twelve vernier divisions span 23 degrees on the main scale, so each vernier division equals 1 degree 55 minutes. Two main scale divisions minus one vernier division gives 5 minutes.

Least count = 2 main scale divisions โˆ’ 1 vernier division = 2ยฐ โˆ’ 1ยฐ 55′ = 5′

The same result comes from dividing one degree by the twelve vernier divisions. Each vernier line therefore adds 5 minutes to the main scale reading.

How do you read a bevel protractor?

  1. Place the stock firmly against one face of the workpiece.
  2. Swing the blade until it sits flat against the second face, with no light gap.
  3. Lock the turret with the locking nut.
  4. Read the whole degrees on the main scale just before the vernier zero.
  5. Read the vernier on the same side of zero as the main scale is increasing.
  6. Find the vernier line that aligns exactly with a main scale line.
  7. Multiply that line number by 5 minutes and add it to the degree reading.

How do you measure acute and obtuse angles?

The main scale reads up to 90 degrees in each quadrant. The setup decides whether the reading is the angle itself or its supplement.

  • Acute angles (below 90ยฐ): use the acute angle attachment, or read directly when the blade and stock form the acute angle.
  • Obtuse angles (above 90ยฐ): the scale shows the supplement. Subtract the reading from 180ยฐ to get the true angle.
  • Check: sketch the setup before measuring so you know which angle the scale is reporting.

What is a bevel protractor used for?

  • Checking chamfer and bevel angles on machined parts
  • Measuring tapers on shafts and turned components
  • Inspecting dovetails, V-blocks and fixture angles
  • Setting angles for machining, welding and fabrication
  • Verifying angles on dies, moulds and cutting tools

How do you keep a bevel protractor accurate?

  • Clean the stock and blade faces before use.
  • Check zero with the blade parallel to the stock.
  • Never use the blade as a scraper or lever.
  • Store it in its case with the blade retracted.
  • Calibrate at defined intervals against angle standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bevel protractor used for?

It measures and sets angles on chamfers, tapers, dovetails and fixtures.

What is the least count of a universal bevel protractor?

The least count is 5 minutes of arc.

How is the least count of a bevel protractor calculated?

Two main scale divisions minus one vernier division: 2ยฐ minus 1ยฐ 55′, which equals 5′.

What are the main parts of a bevel protractor?

The stock, body, turret, blade, main scale, vernier scale, blade clamp and locking nut.

How do you read an obtuse angle on a bevel protractor?

Read the scale, then subtract the reading from 180ยฐ to get the obtuse angle.

What is the difference between a bevel protractor and a digital protractor?

A bevel protractor is read by eye from a vernier scale. A digital protractor shows the angle on a display.
