A coating thickness gauge measures the thickness of a non-conductive or non-magnetic coating over a base material, using magnetic induction on steel substrates or eddy current on non-ferrous metals. Elektrophysik instruments cover both principles and are used to verify paint, plating, galvanizing and powder-coating thickness against specification.

Magnetic induction gauges measure non-magnetic coatings such as paint or powder coat over a steel or iron substrate by detecting the change in magnetic field caused by the coating’s thickness.
Eddy current gauges measure non-conductive coatings over non-ferrous metal substrates, such as anodizing over aluminium, by inducing an eddy current in the base metal and reading the resulting signal change.
Some instruments combine both probe types in a single unit, automatically selecting the correct method for the substrate detected.
Selection depends primarily on the substrate material (ferrous vs non-ferrous), the coating type, the expected thickness range, and whether measurements are needed in a lab setting or on the shop floor. Coating uniformity requirements and any customer specification for measurement traceability should also guide the choice.
Coating thickness gauges are used in galvanizing plants, powder-coating lines, automotive paint shops, electroplating operations and general fabrication where a protective or decorative coating must meet a minimum or maximum thickness specification.
Coating thickness gauges are typically zeroed and verified against certified reference foils or shims of known thickness on the same base material being measured, at intervals set by your quality system.
