What are Micrometers?

Micrometers, also known as screw Gauges, is a precision measuring instrument, used to obtain very fine measurements most often used in mechanical engineering and machining as well as most mechanical trades. Micrometers are available in both Digital and Analog models.

Micrometers adhere to Abbe’s principle, which enables them to perform accurate measurements.

What precautions should one take while using the Micrometer?

  • Avoid over-tightening the thimble, which could damage either the micrometer or the item clamped between spindle and anvil. 
  • In larger micrometers the anvil and spindle may not touch each other, in such cases the Micrometer Setting Rods, or the Slip Gauges can be used, but ensure that the value is taken from the calibrated certificate and not from the gauge. Preset the value on the micrometer and then measure the equipment. 
  • While measuring, keep the Abbe’s principle in mind that even a small deviation will cause a larger error. 
  • For better results soak the equipment is the same room temperature and then proceed for measurement. 
  • While storing a micrometer, ensure that the measuring surfaces are not in contact. 
  • Use the locking knob to lock it so that the micrometer can be protected from any damage.
